Do you have to be a strong swimmer to be a diver? In any aquatic sport it is definitely an asset to be a good swimmer, but we are not concerned with how perfect your front crawl is. We teach diving to anyone who is comfortable in the water and has an average swimming ability. The Open Water (beginner) swimming requirement is 200 meters, un-timed, any way except on your back (even dog paddling!).
Is it too cold to learn how to dive in the winter? Anytime is a good time to learn to dive! The ocean temperature varies only one or two degrees Celsius between the summer and the winter. Average water temperature is 10 degrees Celsius/ 50 degrees Fahrenheit. We provide proper fitting, quality wetsuits to ensure comfort in the water. Marine life is abundant all year round and it is a known secret among divers that the visibility underwater is better during the winter months.
Is Vancouver Island a fulfilling place to dive? Jacques Cousteau was noted to say that British Columbia is the most beautiful place in the world to dive aside from the Red Sea. Needless to say, Vancouver Island has been internationally renowned by diving and marine life enthusiasts due to the acres of plant life, extensive marine life, tremendous underwater photography, caves, cliffs, underwater parks, accessible wrecks, and brilliant colours.
Is diving expensive? No, diving does not have to be expensive. Your course tuition is less than $8 an hour and everything is provided in the price so there are no additional expenses or surprises. On completion of the course you will have an opportunity to cut your future rental equipment costs in half. This means that to rent everything you need for 24 hours it is about $39 or only $52 for an entire weekend. If you do aspire to purchase your own gear, going for a dive could cost less than your morning cup of coffee!
What are the age limitations? The limitation in recreational diving is not age, but the level of common sense, awareness and comfort a diver possesses. The minimum age to receive your PADI Open Water certification is ten years old. At the other end of the scale we have trained active divers over 70 years of age.
Is diving strenuous? Diving is not strenuous if it is performed properly. As with any sport, inefficient technique can be tiring. We spend time ensuring that equipment is sized properly, and that our students are relaxed and using their energy efficiently.
What if it takes me a little longer to catch on? We guarantee that you will become a certified diver. Class sizes are small, minimum four students, eight students maximum so we are able to give more personalized instruction. Private courses are also available if required. We offer more diving experience and air time while under instructor supervision with two additional dives beyond PADI requirements.
Is the theory hard? The purpose of the theory portion of the course is to ensure that diving students are knowledgeable in their chosen recreation. The program includes regular lectures from your PADI Dive Instructor along with theory portions supplemented by comprehensive video, handouts, and instruction manual. The scuba diving theory is informative, easily grasped and well presented.
What courses are offered that will fit my particular schedule? We offer evening and weekend courses, weekend only courses, weekday programs, and private courses built to suit your schedule. The scuba diving course is taught in modules, if it is required you can complete different parts of the program in different classes. We can work with your schedule to get you diving!
